Paul Foisy
"Big Sugar"
(12-track CD, recorded at Wig Wam Studios, Thonotosassa Paul Foisy
(vocals, guitars, bass, keyboards, percussion), Billy Daniel
(harmonica), 46:24)
Foisy renders the DIY, one-man-band idiom better than just about anybody
around here, especially with his latest release (we think his last disc
featured a pickup band, but it's been awhile...). Except for Billy
Daniel's ace harp work on the opening title track (a ripping J.Geils
rock/blues), Foisy does all the writing, playing, and singing in a
strong original set, alternating between rockabilly, Southern Rock, and
surf-ish instrumental tracks. Where as a lot of solo studio work tends
to sound a bit hollow-centered (we like to use the term
"inbred" around here)-since all the parts are rendered by the
same set of hands-Foisy manages to maintain an unusually high level of
musicianship, sounding more like a group of collaborators instead of
just his lonesome. That said, Foisy's material has that certain classic
charm that Dave Edmunds used to portray in Rockpile, yet, there's a
distinct '70s Dixie/blues/boogie/country ranch that emanates from his
swift-fingered guitar work. Since we're in the mood to request a few
favorites, we'll toss a few bucks in the coffee can for "At the Top
of the World" and the fierce "Don Diegos Last Ride." You
guitar collectors definitely need to check out Foisy's battle axe on the
back cover, that looks like it was some kind of futuristic toaster
before somebody rigged up a set of strings for it.
